Today on Modern Art Notes: The Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver next month. Still was arguably the first abstract expressionist one of the two or three greatest painters of his time, but his place in art history has long been uncertain because so little of his work has been out in the world. With the opening of the new museum — which will control well over 90 percent of his art — I profile the artist. This is the first of three parts.
